Born in Perthshire, Scotland, Derek has over 30 years experience as a working shepherd in the difficult conditions on the mountains in Scotland and the rugged terrain of the fells of the Lake District. This experience has given Derek a very clear idea of the type and quality of dog that makes a Killiebrae Sheepdog. Derek believes that no amount of training can make up for a poor quality dog. For this reason, he breeds only from dogs and bitches that have something 'special.'

Drawing upon his direct experiences in every day work on the mountains, his wealth of experience trialling at the highest level, and carefully studying other handlers, Derek has finely honed his training techniques. He has also developed a way of clearly presenting his training methods to both novice and experienced sheepdog handlers. His book and videos are popular around the world. Derek is also highly sought after to judge trials and put on training courses in the UK, Europe and North America.

Derek lives at Lonscale Farm with his wife, Helen, who is a talented artist and avid gardener. They have three children. Lonscale Farm, 500 hectares set within the dramatic English Lake District, has been Derek's home for 20 years. Check out the scenery by clicking here.
